USAG gymnastics has divided the Junior Olympic (JO) Program into 10 levels. At Peninsula, we begin taking athletes to competitions at Level 4. The minimum age for this level of competition is 6 years old. At Levels 4-6, all athletes across the country perform the same routines on all four events (vault, bars, beam and floor). The emphasis in these levels is to master basic skills that will enable skill development in the future and to experience the thrill of the competitive environment.
Our Compulsory season is in the Fall. We attend 5-6 local competitions each year and each athlete will have the opportunity to qualify to NORCAL State Championships.
Optional athletes and coaches work together to design routines that highlight the strength and personality of each athlete. Each routine must meet the standards set by USAG. The emphasis the Optional Program is skill development. As athletes move up the levels, they must increase their difficulty on each of the events.
As our students enter high school, there is also an opportunity for those at the highest levels to work towards an athletic collegiate scholarship.
TOPS (Talent Opportunity Program) is a national talent search and educational program for female gymnast ages 7-11 and their coaches. During the months of June and July gymnasts are evaluated on physical abilities at the state or regional levels.
Our Tiny TOPS class is designed to prepare students for a future in the TOPS program. Students will be selected for this advanced program based on their age, physical abilities and desire to learn gymnastics. Our TOPS students have achieved success both locally and nationally since Peninsula began competing in the program in 2009.
Isabella Love, a Level 7 gymnast, is a two time National TOPS Test Qualifier and qualified to TOPS “B” Camp as an 8 year-old in 2011. She has had the privilege of traveling with coaches George Iusan and Ashley Hansen to the National Team Training Center in Hunstville, TX to learn from the National Team Staff. Love and her teammates are gearing up for another season of TOPS this spring.
Peninsula follows the curriculum for TOPS set by USAG.
